Our Roots
The Calgary Dance Club (formerly the University of Calgary Ballroom Dance Club or UCBDC) was first started as a University of Calgary student-run club in 1975 as a friendly social place to learn and dance. As Calgary’s longest running and largest dance club, it has been the starting place for many dance professionals in the city, many of whom run their own studios or specialties now.
Expanding into the Community
In response to the changing needs of the Calgary dance community and availability of spaces at the University of Calgary, The Calgary Dance Club has moved into the greater Calgary community, meaning we now host our classes and events at various community centres and venues around the city.
Our Legacy
The Calgary Dance Club thrives on dance knowledge and expertise. We also recognize that different approaches to dance enrich our community’s knowledge and ability to learn. The Calgary Dance Club has worked with a variety of dance professionals over the years, including JoJo Belmonte, Kim Donaghy, Bryan Senn, Michel Guimond, Dan Pittman, and Alexandra McPherson. As Calgary’s longest running dance club, many dance professionals in the community started at the Club and have gone on to be successful instructors and judges in Calgary and beyond. David Joseph and Doug Davidson are two of our alumni.
